Alliances
They were made to deter other countries from attacking, which started with Germany trying to keep France from trying to avenge the Franco-Prussian War. The fighting started in Eastern Europe with the Russians backing the Serbians, and the Germans backing Austria-Hungary. Russia and Serbia were bound together by a treaty, and the Russians were mobilizing to protect Serbia. The Germans signed a treaty with A-H and saw the mobilization of Russia as an act-0f-war on A-H and declared war on Russia on August 1st.
Allied Powers:
The first allied powers were Great Britain, France, and Russia, which was also known as the triple entente. Russia and France were bound by treaty, while Britain had a "moral obligation" to defend France and neutral Belgium. Because of the treaty with Russia, France went to war with Germany on August 3rd, and Britain declared war on Germany in August 4th. The United States of America joined the allied powers in April 6th 1917 when Germany's submarines were threatening U.S commercial shipping.
Central Powers:
The central powers were comprised of the German, Austria-Hungary, and Italian empire, which was also called the triple alliance. Austria-Hungary was the first to go to war on July 28th, 1914 against the kingdom of Serbia. Between August 1-4 the German empire went to war against Russia, France, and Belgium. Italy however decided to watch how the war progressed and decided to join the triple entente. In 1915 Italy declared war on A-H and on Germany in 1916. The Ottoman empire joined this alliance in August 1914 by signing the Turco-German Alliance. The Bulgarian empire joined this alliance on October 11th 1915, for two reasons: 1). It benefitted the economy, 2). Serbia and Russia was their greatest enemy.
